Message from the Superintendent

Dear Families, Educators, and Staff:

As a teacher, coach, principal and now a superintendent, something has always stuck with me over the years. The “Friday night lights effect” has always fired up the kids. From Pre-K to High School; students walk into the building proudly wearing the school colors. The band, cheer, dance, and the athletes repetitiously and relentlessly practice to perform in front of their home crowd. This atmosphere is infectious. We want all of our kids to have this feeling, regardless of what grade or campus they attend. We want to strive to create opportunities for ALL students to be successful! ALL students matter and all students can be the star. I challenge everyone to be supportive and encourage all HISD students to share their learning. Encourage the little sparks. These little sparks may be the start of a fire that will last a lifetime.

Encourage Parental and Community Involvement

Parental engagement and community support are critical for a child’s success. Our schools actively involve parents in their child’s education through regular communication, workshops, and volunteer opportunities. You can also provide valuable support by offering tutoring and mentoring.. By fostering a strong partnership between schools, families, and communities, we can create a network of support that enhances student achievement. Contact your child’s campus for more information on how you can become more involved.

Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Encourage a growth mindset in students. Believing that abilities can be developed through effort and perseverance, can significantly impact their success. Educators and parents should focus on praising effort rather than innate talent, fostering resilience, and providing constructive feedback. This approach helps students view challenges as opportunities for growth and encourages a lifelong love of learning.

Encourage your Kids to Get Involved

Kids involved in extracurricular activities, clubs, and organizations are more likely to be successful in and out of school. These students interact and make more diverse friend groups and relationships. They are challenged to problem solve and can develop solutions or cope with problems at a higher level than their peers that are not involved. There are many existing and new clubs available for students to become involved. Encourage your child to get involved.

ATTENDANCE:

We appreciate your support in ensuring your student is attending school every day and by regularly connecting with your student’s teachers. As you can imagine, attendance is a significant factor concerning student success. The more a student is absent, the increased chance he/she will fail their courses, fall behind in class, and lose a connection with the school. We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. We also know that when students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically.

It is the responsibility of the parent and guardian to make sure their child is attending school daily. We don’t want your child to fall behind in school and get discouraged. Please ensure that your child attends school every day and arrives on time. Here are a few practical tips to help support regular attendance:

Ensure your children go to school every day unless they are truly sick.
Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.
Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your children feel anxious about going to school.
Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your child to school.

Our goal this year is to ensure that every student attends school regularly. Let us know how we can best support you and your children so that they can show up for school on time every day. Working together ensures success for both the school and the students.
